What is Sub Ohm Vaping
Everyone has probably heard about sub ohm vaping, whether that’s in a vaping article, in a forum or in a vape shop but what is sub ohm vaping?
Vaping has come a long way since it all began, the options available were very limited, I’m sure some of you remember the electronic cigarettes that looked like a cigarette. They had minimal flavour, a low nicotine hit and provided barely any vapour, there’s no wonder why people no longer use them. The vaping industry has grown, the technology for vape kits has evolved and we are spoilt for choice. There’s different ways to vape also, Mouth to Lung (MTL) and Direct to Lung (DTL)
The Mouth to Lung style of vaping is the one that closely mimics smoking a cigarette the most, this is due to the way of inhaling into your mouth first and then into your lungs, similar to a typical cigarette. People who prefer the MTL lifestyle tend to use starter vape kits such as the SMOK Nord 4 Pod Vape Kit or similar devices to the Voopoo Drag X Vape Kit. These types of Pod kits are generally smaller and more basic. The best E Liquids for this style should have a VG/PG (Vegetable Glycerine)/ Propylene Glycol) ratio of 50/50 and the nicotine strength for freebase nicotine varies between 3mg to 18mg. For Salt Nicotine typically you can get Salt Nic E Liquids with a strength of 5mg to 20mg.
The Direct to Lung style of vaping is where sub ohm vaping comes into play. DTL is where you take a long inhale directly into your lungs. The Sub-Ohm vape kits tend to be larger than a starter vape kit and they will have various controls for the tanks, coils and airflow. The best E Liquid for sub ohm vaping would have a higher VG ratio and a lower nicotine strength used with them is generally higher in VG (Vegetable Glycerine) and lower in nicotine. Vegetable Glycerine is what creates the vapour, so the higher the ratio, the more the cloud. Due to the amount of vapour produced it is advised to use a lower Nicotine strength then you would ML vaping.
Sub Ohm vaping is when somebody vapes using a coil that has a resistance below 1.0. An “Ohm” is the unit of electrical resistance given by a coil or electric current, it was named after the German physicist and mathematician Georg Simon Ohm. When vaping the device's battery heats up the coil so that when the liquid passes over, it turns from a liquid into a vapor. When the coil has a resistance below 1.0 Ohms then the person using the vape is considered Sub Ohm Vaping. When somebody sub ohm vapes, the cloud of vapor that is produced is larger and more flavourful, cloud chasing has become very popular in the past few years and when you combine great flavoured E Liquids, it’s pretty obvious why.
What Sub Ohm Vape?
We’ve just touched on the great cloud production that can be had from Sub ohm vaping but why else do people sub ohm vape? There’s many reasons why people have turned to Sub ohm vaping, as sub ohm vaping gives you superior flavour production as well as cloud production.
Cloud Production
Sub-Ohm vaping will produce thicker, denser and bigger clouds, making it a popular choice among vapers. It is very common for vapers to have multiple devices so that they can use both methods of vaping. Out in public it can be considered rude and inconsiderate to ‘blow clouds’ into the face of passers by, which is where a POD vape kit comes in handy. Whereas a sub ohm vape kit is great for using in vape friendly environments and at home.
Intense flavour
E Liquid manufacturers know what their customers want and that’s why they produce specifically developed high VG E Liquids to accommodate low resistance, Sub-Ohm devices. E Liquid shortfills are a great shout for sub ohm vaping, you can check out some great offers in our Online UK vape deals.
Satisfying Lung Hit
Unlike DTL vaping, MTL vaping gives you a larger and stronger hit. This is one reason why sub-ohm vaping should only be for advanced or expert users. With stronger hits, more of the substance is being vaped.
Vaping Experience
Sub Ohm vaping really is more about the experience, the cloud vapour and flavour takes priority over the need for nicotine. Due to the higher ratio of VG you will get less of a throat hit as you would from DTL vaping.
Best E Liquids for Sub Ohm Vaping
With Sub-ohm devices, what you should be looking for is a thicker liquid. Something along the lines of 70/30 or 80/20 VG/PG ratio is best to use, basically the higher the VG the better the cloud production. When it comes to nicotine strength, we would say that 95% of sub-ohm users will use 3mg of nicotine. This is because a sub-ohm device produces a lot more vapour, therefore carrying more nicotine per inhale. This doesn’t mean that you can’t use a higher strength like a 6mg, this does of course come down to the vapers preference but we wouldn’t recommend more than 6mg. It can become very harsh on your throat.
How to Sub ohm vape
Luckily for everyone, vape kits have improved and it is a lot safer to sub ohm vape now. To Sub ohm vape you used to have to have a good understanding of ohm's law and when using a Rebuildable Dripping Atomizer(RDA) you would have to wrap your own wire, check the resistance to ensure it was safe to use. I'm sure you’ve heard of horrible vaping disasters where devices exploded, this was caused by people not understanding what they were doing.
Nowadays though you can pick up sub ohm vape tanks like the Freemax Fireluke 3 Sub Ohm Tank and what’s great about this piece of kit and similar tanks is that you can buy coils for them where you simply screw them in and then you’re good to go.
This doesn’t however mean that RDA’s are no longer used, these are still very popular when it comes to sub ohm vaping but we cannot stress enough, you must learn ohm's law and see how to use your hardware properly and safely. Take the time to understand the different coils, their wattage and which combination works best. Also ensure that you do not overheat the battery while powering the coils. The safest way to Sub-Ohm vape is with a regulated vape device.
As far as how you actually inhale with sub ohm, the style is a little different from mouth to lung vaping. When you mouth to lung vape you drag vapour into your mouth, then down into the lungs. Sub Ohm vaping (DTL), bypasses the mouth. You inhale much more deeply straight into your lungs.
Best Sub ohm Vaping Kit
As we have said, the technology for vaping hardware is very different to how it used to be. We are always building our collection of both E Liquids and vape hardware ad currently our top picks for sub ohm vaping is the GeekVape Obelisk 120 FC Z Vape Kit and the Innokin Adept Zlide Vape Kit, these are excellent devices that’s been designed for this purpose. These devices are also regulated
There are many Vaping Hardware manufacturers, many brands you would have heard of and we would suggest always doing some research before purchasing a new vape kit. Check online for reviews on kits to see how other people have found them.
